Here is the output of a technical SEO audit I ran in early July of the wordpress.org ecosystem. Overall, I would say there are no serious roadblocks in any of the sites (roadblocks that would impede the crawl or otherwise cause portions of the site/sites to fail to index).
A couple marketing issues I immediately noticed:
the language on the homepage is generally too vague to compete for rankings with direct competitors. By changing the language (even just in some of the H tags) to reflect more of what WordPress is (specifically - a CMS or a website builder, etc) and why it is a good/safe choice, I think the WP.org homepage will jump to the first page of the SERPs for terms other than just "WordPress" :)
the "news" section has no schema (at all) and specifically no schema that would identify the articles as "news articles". Ensuring that the news is presented as "real news" would help those articles appear in the special results areas of Google (like news.google.com, top stories, etc.)
If we want to control the narrative, we need to present ourselves as the authoritative source of the news.
I promise, the core audience will still find the information and still read the updates. We need to cast a wider net.
