Description
This PR refactors the project in anticipation of the monorepo merge by making non-destructive changes towards simplifying the code. If the monorepo does not work out, this is still a valuable refactor to stand on it's own.
Testing Instructions
Since these are purely refactors, a passing CI would be satisfactory enough.
