Currently, developers spend a lot of time dealing with legacy issues. This time could be reduced if WordPress required a modern PHP version and then be invested into actual enhancements and features instead.

For site owners, this would result in more frequent improvements that they can use on their site.

also while we are at it, we would need less legacy code, meaning wp gets less cluttered and better in general which is a great enhancement.
