OpenLens Setup Guide on Windows

Setting up OpenLens on Windows is a smooth process, allowing you to efficiently manage and monitor Kubernetes clusters from a desktop application. OpenLens, a community-driven fork of the Lens Kubernetes IDE, provides a robust, open-source Kubernetes management experience.

Steps to Install OpenLens on Windows:

  1. Download OpenLens: Go to the OpenLens GitHub repository and download the latest .exe installer for Windows from the Releases section.

  2. Install the Application: Run the downloaded .exe file, and follow the on-screen instructions. The installer will guide you through the setup process, typically requiring just a few clicks.

  3. Launch OpenLens: After installation, open OpenLens from the Start menu or desktop shortcut.

  4. Add Your Kubernetes Cluster(s):

OpenLens will prompt you to load your Kubernetes clusters. You can do this by selecting your kubeconfig file(s) or by manually connecting clusters through the File > Add Cluster option.

If you don’t have a kubeconfig file handy, contact your Kubernetes admin or export it from your cluster.

  1. Customize Your Dashboard:

OpenLens provides a clean and customizable dashboard for monitoring nodes, pods, namespaces, and other resources.

You can also install extensions from the Extensions tab for added functionality, such as monitoring and logging tools.

  1. Configure Access and Security:

Since OpenLens uses your kubeconfig, make sure to review your access permissions, especially in shared environments, to comply with your organization’s security policies.

Windows-Specific Review: OpenLens on Windows offers a lightweight, stable, and intuitive Kubernetes management experience. With seamless cluster integration and easy navigation through Kubernetes resources, OpenLens provides powerful tools for cluster management. The Windows version runs smoothly, and the customizability of the interface enhances productivity. While it may lack proprietary features from Lens, its open-source nature and strong community support make it a top choice for Windows users managing Kubernetes.

Today, I'll be setting up OpenLens and going through the setup guide that was created. I'll follow each step carefully to complete the OpenLens installation and configuration. In addition, I'll attend the daily stand-up meeting, the Focus Jam meeting, and oversee the presentation as well. I'll also be providing some training for the team, giving an overview for the new members. During the Focus Jam session in Focus Jammer, I'll cover key topics like CI/CD, CM, and teach Agile philosophy along with the Scrum and Kanban frameworks.
