Fix publish, run and test on multiple versions

• Fixes mistakes in the docs and build that I found in the v1.7.0 release
• We might not want to run tests here again, but I feel better running tests on the same infrastructure we do releases on.

Maybe it's time we drop CircleCI entirely if this PR looks good? Ditto with codecov. Seems mostly useless to me.
