Hi, I hope that this is not too big. I tried very hard to stay within the scope of the project outlines.
This is mostly refactoring, with an interest towards maintainability. This is more in line with curren Python best practices.
I have some other improvements I would like to contribute as well, that will work towards the other project goals.
