Roku XS player will not play videos captioned with Subler #569

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Either add Vobsub OCR subtitles or subtitles from a .srt file to a video
2. Try to play on Roku XS player using the Roku USB Media Player, or the Direct
Play option in the Roku Plex app.
3. Strip out or disable the subtiles, and the files still fail to play, as in
step 2.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

Plex app: Direct Play Unavailable / This Video isn't supported for Direct Play

USB Media Player: File Not Playable - The file type might not be supported, the
codec used to compress the video might not be supported, the file might be
protected, or the file might be damaged or corrupt.

On iPod Touch, Mac iTunes, VLC, Quicktime Player, Nice Player, the files play
correctly.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?
Subler version 0.19 on Mac OS 10.6
Roku software version 4.9 - build 5060

Please provide any additional information below.
Videos rendered from DVD using HandBrake 0.9.8 or 5235svn x86_64 (2013020301)
Videos rendered from DVD with text based captions will play correctly on Roku.
It is only the videos with subtitles added with Subler that will not play.

The problem appears to be with multi-chapter videos, saved by Subler.
Subler adds a "Photo-JPEG" video track when there is a chapter track.
With the combination of the Chapter and Photo-JPEG track, the video cannot be
direct played on Roku.

Videos can SOMETIMES be made playable by using Subler to remove both the
Chapter and Video/Photo-JPEG tracks.
The videos may be salvaged only if they were rendered in Handbrake with text
captions that were originally rendered from DVD text based captions (not VOBSUB
converted with OCR).
Video files with captions that were rendered from VOBSUB subtitles using
Subler's OCR capability cannot be made direct playable, even if you use Subler
to remove the subtitle track. They remain permanently corrupted and only played
on Roku via Transcoding.

I have placed some test files here:
http://share.cx.com/2fBntY

"twochapters captioned.m4v" - Rendered from DVD including text based captions.
Playable on Roku using "Direct Play"

"twochapters captioned subler saved.m4v" - The above file, opened, then saved
in Subler v0.19. Not direct playable but salvageable if the Chapter and
Video/Photo-JPEG tracks are removed.

"twochapters vobsub subler ocr tx3g unrepairable.m4v" - Rendered from DVD
including vobsub captions, then OCR converted to tx3g captions in Subler. Not
playable on Roku using "Direct Play and not salvagable for direct play, even
after removing all tracks in Subler keeping only the video and audio tracks.
Can only be played on Roku using transcoding.

Addendum: The problem exists, even if the video has no subtitles, but does have
multiple chapters. If it is saved in Subler, it will not be playable in Roku
USB Media Player, or in Plex on Roku using "Direct Play". It will only play in
Plex if transcoded. The video can only be made playable in Roku USB Media
Player, or Plex "Direct Play" if both the "Chapter Track / Text" and "Video
Track / Photo - JPEG" are removed. If .srt subtitles or OCR'd VOBSUB subtitles
were included, IT WILL NOT BE SALVAGEABLE FOR ROKU USB MEDIA PLAYER AT ALL, and
only playable through Plex if transcoded. This is particularly serious if you
depend on the Roku USB Media Player to play your videos.

What this boils down to, is that it would be nice if there was a way to
suppress the automatic creation of the "Video / Photo - JPEG" track for
multi-chapter movie files (and also remove from existing movie files). If this
track is present, the Roku set-top box refuses to direct play the movie.

There is a checkbox in the preferences.

Man am I clueless or what!? Unchecking the "Chapters: Create Preview Images" in
the preferences avoids the Roku playback limitation! Thank you so much!!
