Subler-created AAC PL-II audio tracks not visible or available in Apple TV 2 movie playback #742

What steps will reproduce the problem?

1. Using Subler 0.25, remux a MKV with AC3 audio track to M4V with AC3
passthrough and AC3 to AAC PL-II audio track and add the file to iTunes 10.7.

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

1. When played in Plex and XBMC, the 2-channel AAC track is selectable and
playable.
2. When added to iTunes 10.7 and played through the Apple TV 2 (over HDMI),
only the AC3 surround track is visible and playable. The AAC 2-channel track
does not appear in the pop-up menu on the Apple TV but it does appear when
played in iTunes on my Mac Mini.
3. The AAC tracks of M4Vs remuxed with earlier versions of Subler work just
fine on the Apple TV.

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

- Subler 0.25; OS X 10.6.8 Server; iTiunes 10.7; Apple TV 2 running 6.0.2.

Please provide any additional information below:

If the AAC PL-II track is from a Handbrake transcode or a MP4Tools remux, then
the AAC track is visible and selectable on the Apple TV 2.

Subler writes in the mp4 the info that the aac track is a "fallback" of the
ac-3 track. So iTunes and the AppleTV will play the ac-3 if it can, if not it
will switch automatically to the aac one.

If you don't want this behavior you can change the fallback of the ac-3 in
Subler.

I checked one of the recently remuxed files. The AC3 surround track was set
with the fallback to the AAC PL-II track enabled. But the AAC track isn't
available on the Apple TV 2. It doesn't even appear.

So, you mean I have to disable the audio fallback if I want to be able to
switch manually between the two audio tracks?

Right. With the fallback the AppleTV knows it's the same audio track and select
automatically the best one.
So apart from bugs in the AppleTV software there isn't really a reason to
disable it…

Okay, many thanks for clarifying that. I was confused that only the Apple TV
hid the 2-channel track while all other video players, including iTunes, let me
manually select either track.

I thought with fallback enabled, the Apple TV would switch automatically but
would still leave you with the ability to switch tracks manually in case there
was a problem with one of them, such as low volume dialogue, which can be a
problem with some AC3 tracks. I normally encode the AAC PL-II track with
+10-20% audio gain just in case I find the AC3 track too quiet.
