I think as long as a black blob flashes anywhere on the screen - it IS
distracting. It
should be either in a special place taking from the reading space statically
(for a
reader who really wants to track the page number), or appear when user
explicitly
requests it. Also I would suggest to use black text on white background for
this
widget.

When I scroll the page, usually I begin reading from the top of screen. But
here is a page number alert :( which overlaps the text. In case when page alert
will be on the bottom side, I can continue reading from the top of screeen.
