Saving or saving as leads to an unresponsive application

When I save to a project file, the application hangs, but then the save dialog shows up after about 30 seconds. It then saves the file, but doesn't add the '.atnx' file extension to the file.
When I load a project file, the application hangs, but then the load dialog shows up after about 30 seconds. If the file doesn't have the '.atnx' extension, I don't see it in the dialog.
