Build fixes #38

These bring the tree to a state that successfully builds under GitHub workflows, x86_64 and arm64 (https://github.com/Xpra-org/xpra/issues/4017#issuecomment-1932314101), but does not include the CI config itself. The latter will be in a separate PR.
