So here's how Reddit does it in the sidebar and I think that's how I also described it:
I think only communities should be shown, not posts.
I'll leave my thoughts, too:
The same pieces of UI are being stretched over two different categories of devices, resulting in some compromises. I think the new navigation is an improvement on my phone and tablet, where the bottom dock is used, but on desktop / legacy layout I much prefer sidebar navigation over the top bar and its labelless icons.
I actually planned to make sidebar navigation the only way on desktop, but people would definitely complain about navigation changes.
I moved recent communities to the command palette, what about that? (Press / or Ctrl + p, or right click the photon logo)
While this feature is nice, I think the implementation is counter-intuitive and not helpful.
I suggest to create a place in the left sidebar, below accounts, to display "Recently visited" posts/communities, if the user has visited more than 3 communities or posts, for example. Just like how it's done with "Subscribed", with the ability to toggle. There's a lot of space on the left sidebar.
One problem with the current implementation is that it prevents instances to set a wider logo. It is also pretty unusual to have such a history displayed in the header, that's imho not where it belongs.
On a general note, if you want people to use your app, I think you should not use mobile design principles on desktop. Power users generally prefer the desktop environment and you alienate those if you do not use desktop design principles.
That includes the lack of descriptions for buttons. Compare with reddit, where most actions or buttons have a description. Even the search has a description.
