I can see how it would seem that way, but I think we should give it time. We've had the old layout for something like 7 years - practically any change has the potential to look weird after being one way for so long.
I think most views really benefit from the extra width - it can be much easier to process information when it's given breathing room. Many of the views haven't been redone yet, so they should look less awkward soon enough.
It seems that the new version of Shifts is a bit 'wide'.
On a 1440x900 screen, the new version of shifts has a width of 1140 pixels. However, it feels much wider because most of the pages seem like they only have one column. The old version of Shifts had a width of 900 pixels which felt a little cramped, but the layouts were much more busy. Maybe a compromise could be made?
