When you craft a smeltery controller for the first time, a chat message appears warning you about alternative fuels

Lava either won't be able to melt everything, or may not be a smeltery fuel at all. I want this to be extremely obvious to new players. It would be quite frustrating to be unable to use a smeltery and not know why.
