The Wikipedia page has some information on how osmium is made. Apparently it's a biproduct of refining copper and nickel ore: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Osmium
@PandaBoy444, thoughts on this?
I went through all of the recipes for the Energized Smelter, Precision Sawmill, and Crusher and made a list of the unique recipes the mod needs to work. Here is that list:
Enrichment chamber: -3 HDPE Pellet > HDPE sheet - -Redstone > compressed redstone - -Diamond > compressed diamond - -Charcoal/coal > compressed carbon -Refined obsidian dust > compressed obsidian - -Dirty metal dust > metal dust
Crusher: -Bio Fuel -Metal lump > dirty metal dust -Salt block > salt
The sawmill didn't do anything unique, and the energized smelter is just a furnace. Here are the replacement recipes I'm going to add. Note that Panda may choose to replace these with better options:
Metal press:
[x] Refined obsidian dust > plate press > compressed obsidian
Pressure chamber or compression chamber:
[x] 3 HDPE pellet > HDPE sheet
ImE crusher, squeezer or drill grinder:
[x] Metal lump > dirty metal dust
Chop saw, horse powered chopping block:
[ ] Popped chorus fruit > 4 bio fuel
Fluid agitator:
[ ] Water + dirty metal ore > metal dust
Smeltery casting:
I think we need to get rid of osmium altogether, I don't see much reason for it to exist, all of those machines can be made of steel or some other metal.
The reason I ended up including it was that it's required for the osmium compressor. You can't change the osmium ingot with CraftTweaker.
Then again, we should probably just remove the machine.
@PandaBoy444: it's used only for refined obsidian and glowsone ingot
Which machine should we use instead? Both alloys have enough uses to be worth keeping.
Glowstone ingot you can already make with normal casting of liquid glowstone, we can add it to other processes as well. The refined obsidian you can already make by putting the dust in an arc furnace, the dust is made from obsidian and diamond in the metallurgic infuser but I can think of a few other ways to make it as well. I wouldn't want to lock it behind the arc furnace though, so finding a way to inefficiently turn the dust into the ingot would be ideal.
We could move that recipe to a cheaper machine, and then change the arc furnace recipe so it doesn't require a diamond.
I think we can keep the diamond, it's a high-level ingredient I'd prefer to keep it that way, we can make it output more if you prefer, though I don't think it's too expansive.
We can add more uses for the ingot to make it more enticing to automate.
It seems the refining process uses the diamonds to refine it and not as an ingredient, so if we can find other ways that make sense for refining and are a balanced alternative that could be an option.
It's currently used to turn Rustic's slate into Earthworks' purple slate. One nugget is required to convert 8 slate.
What about crystalized chorus chunk? it's a by-product of squeezing chorus fruit.
Obsidian is already pretty interesting to automate. It can't be made in a smeltery or a fluid transposer, so it needs to be done in-world.
Ok, we can use the grindstone to refine it, it's much slower than the infuser so that can equal out.
I'd like another recipe too. Factory Tech should be encouraged, but not required.
Refining the dust in the mixer with water and slag? 3 obsidian dust + 1 slag + 1,000mb water = molten refined obsidian?
What if we combine obsidian with skystone?
We can make it a rare by-product for crushing obsidian, then it will be obtainable but not very convenient.
I like that idea. We'd need to give crushed obsidian more uses, though. I like the idea of making skystone from redstone, basalt and obsidian for some reason.
@PandaBoy444: I don't think it fits because skystone is a combination of rare metals from space
We can make another issue about using crushed obsidian. For now, I like these recipes:
A rare byproduct of crushing obsidian
Refining obsidian in a grindstone
Something involving obsidian and chorus chunks (this would be the efficient, high level recipe)
Sounds good. To be clear though, there is crushed obsidian and refined crushed obsidian, we are talking about the latter (?). I think we should keep the diamond recipe as well though, make it as efficient as the chorus one but much faster
Yes, we're talking about crushed refined obsidian. I agree with the diamond recipe.
I'd also like to remove the following machines:
[x] All of the bins - We have other alternatives
[x] Osmium Compressor - Replacement recipes already discussed in this thread
[x] Combiner - Since we're planning to add 8x ore processing chains for some ores, a way to turn metals back into ores seems like begging for an exploit to pop up. It doesn't seem to be super useful.
[x] Digital miner - Power creep 101
[x] Factory versions of other disabled machines
[ ] Metalurgic infuser - We will need to move several recipes to other machines.
I would think all of the factories should be removed, they seem to be just a way to put a "factory" into one block.
A lot of people have complained about Mekanism machines causing performance improvements, both in the TPS and FPS departments. I think we should keep them to cut down on machine spam.
I've disabled a bunch of Mekanism recipes. Here's the complete list:
-Enrichment chamber (and factory variants) Reason: Magic block Important recipes: Already added to other machines
-Crusher (and factory variants) Reason: Magic block Important recipes: Already added to other machines
-Precision sawmill (and factory variants) Reason: Magic block Important recipes: None
-Energized smelter (and factory variants) Reason: Magic block Important recipes: None
-Combiner (and factory variants) Reason: I never liked being able to turn metals back into ores. If we ever add a 9x ore processing chain, it will be an exploit. Important recipes: None -Osmium compressor (and factory variants) Reason: Magic block Important recipe: Refined obsidian, refined glowstone
-The fluid, RF and item cables Reason: Magic block, very unstable
-The digital miner Reason: Seriously OP
-All the bins Reason: We have more interesting alternatives
Mekanism's late game is fiendishly complex. That said, I don't like the early game. It's based on a few magic blocks that function almost identically to the pulverizer. The early game seems like a poor fit, but once you reach 3x ore processing it's fantastic.
Here's my proposal on how to work it into the rest of the pack:
Removed the Energized Smelter, Precision Sawmill, and Crusher.
Possibly disable the enrichment chamber. It doesn't break anything,
Effectively gate the mod behind either Factory Tech or Immersive Engineering by adding the functionality of the above machines to those mods.
Remove all of the cables except the gas cables. We have other options for power, item and fluid transfer that are more interesting and much more optimized.
Disable all passive power generation options.
Disabled the digital miner.
Enable osmium ore, bringing us to 6 base metals. Add osmium to other mod recipes so it's at least semi-useful for people not using the mod.
