Small cleanups #9

I'm closing this pull request for the following reasons:

The file renamings are already addressed in your other pull request (#10).

The COPYING file contains the full license. Unfortunately the BSD license doesn't contain a header to easily identify it. We can add a line in the README specifying the name of the license to make it easier to find.

We're in the process of converting our READMEs to the AsciiDoc format.

To replace it, I've created a new issue (#11) which addresses the changes which are desirable.
