Please could explanations be added to Pleroma's pre-installation page and/or configuration page (post-installation) in the Yunohost web admin, explaining the passwords that are required and how they're used?
(This assumes the user who installed Pleroma will be the admin of the new instance, and focuses on that account.)
There is:
The “admin password” that you set on Pleroma’s pre-installation page in the Yunohost web panel. This is the one that cannot contain special characters.
This is only -- as far as I can tell -- needed for installation, and afterwards for setting up two-factor authentication (2FA) in Pleroma FE settings (i.e. the cog icon in the top right, after logging in).
At the moment there's no explanation that this password is different from that of the Yunohost admin user, and it's not clear that it needs to be recorded if 2FA will be set up later on.
The username and password of the Yunohost user who was selected to be the administrator for Pleroma, on the same page.
These become the Pleroma admin account's username and password on installation. The username also becomes the first part of the account's webfinger (i.e. @user@instance.tld).
I think the Yunohost admin user's password is the same entity, in the background, as the password used to sign in to the Pleroma admin account. If so, then changing the former (in the Yunohost web panel or the command line) should automatically change the latter -- regardless of the 'change password' features in Pleroma FE or Admin FE (and may actually explain why these ignore new passwords you set, and only ever log you in with the old ones).
If this is correct, then that's OK -- but needs to be clearly explained somewhere.
If this is not correct, then YNH-Pleroma's 'change password' features are buggy and need addressing. In this scenario, the Yunohost password can be changed but the Pleroma one will stay the same indefinitely.
Brand new, inexperienced admin users of YNH-Pleroma will expect it to allow password changes regardless of how it was installed or what the previous password was. The fact that YNH-Pleroma doesn't do this, may lead to a lot of frustration and confusion that can be avoided by a clear explanation of how it all works. (I speak from experience!)
