the epicardium, forms from a cluster of progenitor cells termed the proepicardium (PE). PE cells migrate onto the myocardium to give rise to the epicardium.PMID: 24885804

The proepicardium is a cluster of cardiac progenitor cells that develops adjacent to the heart and migrates onto the heart to form the outermost layer, the epicardium. Zebrafish form a PE on the pericardial wall, adjacent to the atrioventricular (AV) junction. We find that a PE cluster located at the AV junction forms a cellular bridge between the pericardial mesothelium and the heart. Additional PE clusters form near the venous pole, are released into the pericardial space, and subsequently attach to the heart.ZDB-PUB-140603-8
