This PR adds various improvements to the build script:

Better error handling and reporting
Being able to run the script with a non-root user
Compile latest version (commit) of AVR-libc

Thanks for this! I've reverted the avr-libc change since there's now an official avr-libc 2.2.0 and I made a few other tweaks like using the working directory (pwd) instead of the script location.
