Here's a brief recap of the study design from the ARC proposal:

"Stems from 22 species were harvested in 2013 from trees growing within the nearby Hawkesbury region. Stems were cut, weighed, and placed in a common garden located within native Cumberland Plain woodland adjacent to the UWS Hawkesbury Campus; some species were represented by one diameter class (1-2 cm), while others were represented by two diameter classes (1-2 and 5-9 cm). Additional wood was sampled from each stem for the eventual measurement of wood chemical, morphological, and anatomical trait data and to characterize initial decomposer communities. Replicate pieces were collected after six or twelve months and treated as follows: wood was surface-sterilized then drilled to collect shavings for decomposer community analysis (mass removed was measured), then wood volume and dry mass measured. These pieces have also been stored for the collection of wood trait data. Decay will be monitored until 2018, five years after the experiment was established."

Notes: -> There are 33 combinations of wood species and diameter size -> Some samples represent sawdust from individual branches; other samples include sawdust pooled from more than 1 branch

ALL SAMPLES -> 33 unique codes with 1-4 samples per code -> 10 composited samples, all from the small size class -> 82 samples in total

STEM-SPECIFIC SAMPLES -> 23 unique codes with 3-4 samples per code -> 70 samples in total

SMALL SIZE ONLY -> 21 unique codes with 1-4 samples per code -> 10 composited samples -> 45 samples in total

LARGE SIZE ONLY -> 12 unique codes -> 37 samples in total
