can this be merged? It needs to be back-ported to all other version branches

Sorry, this PR was made on a weekend and I haven't gotten a chance to review or test it yet.

Thanks @RDaneelOlivav for merging this, I still hadn't gotten a chance to test it.

@ben-fido it won't be back-ported to Indigo, that Distribution reached End of Life at the end of last month. If a PR is opened to Kinetic then someone can merge it but we don't support Kinetic on the Robots and it's not a high priority.
