A major GUI overhaul has been in progress for quite some time now. Development has been halted due to many embedded issues with Garry's Mod using Awesomium embedded browser. However, we are resuming work on PlayX being the developers are close to fully integrating chromium as the main html framework.

As far as volume, most media is rendered externally on an process called awesomium.exe, thus there is no localized audio to the player. This will be different with the audio player when playing MP3 audio, since we can play it locally, however, any other media this is impossible to do, thus why the distance disable feature was added a while back.
