This is an import option. Look at the list in the lower left panel.
Bones at the end of chains will always be spheres because there is nowhere
"correct" for their tails to go.

well, they don't have a defined length, but they should have a defined
rotation...

The spheres do have defined rotations; the mesh is just a visualisation. As
with 2D bones, you need to switch the rotation mode to normal before you can
really use it.
