Very nice! But I keep wanting the display to suddenly resolve into a written message for a moment, and then instantly go back to random blinkenlights again!

Thanks! A pseudo-subliminal written message would be a really cool hack, I don't know if it would be possible (the animation is pretty CPU-intensive as it is) but now you've put the idea in my head I'll see if any ways to implement it occur to me.
