Links should open content in new tab #10

(allready reported via Email to Axel...) When a user clicks on a link, that opens another webpage (zühlke webpage, github repository, etc.) the other page should be opened in a new tab (target="_blank") since it is a page that does not link back to our github page, to keep users more longer on the github page for browsing through our several repositories.

+1 for UX. I added it.

I reopen this issue, because clicking on following links does not open a new tab:

I think the Zuehlke logo at the top should not open in a new tab, as the "top logo" on many sites (like Github, Facebook, etc.) opens in the same tab/moves back to the start page.

I fully agree on the other two types of links you've mentioned.

bruderol commented 8 years ago

@wonderb0lt I disagree, because you can not compare the Zühlke logo on this page (which opens a totaly different webpage, with different navigation and base url) to the facebook logo on Facebook (which just routes back to the start page, with same base url and navigation items).

The rule should be: all pages that open on the same webpage (same base-url, same navigation, to go back to where I come from) should not open in its own tab. Since the logo opens a different base url it should open in a new tab (same as the link "Zühlke webpage" does now also, to be consistent).

I think the question is, if the logo should link to our zühlke.com Page or if we want to link to the zühlke.github.io page.

At the moment clicking on the Logo means that we navigate to our zühlke.com page. Because it makes sense to show the Zühlke website when clicking the Zühlke logo. In this case we should open the page on a new tab.

But normally clicking on the Logo means to get navigated to the start/landing/main page. I think this is the user expected behaviour and therefore we should change the linking url to the Zühlke.github.io page. We still have enough possibilities to get to our Zühlke.com page

I imagine that this proposal by @kabaehr is probably not in Marcoms/Axel's @aXXL70 taste, and I think that in this case we should better keep the URL of the logo as it is and use the Zühlke logo to link to the Zühlke webpage. Because of course linking to Zühlke webpage is very important on this page, for people that have been getting attracted by Zühlke through the content can find more information about the company on the webpage. Therefore I propose: just keep the link to the webpage and open it in a new tab (as on other links).

@bruderol: guessing my taste, I like! But let's see if we can find a more factual approach on the topic. I agree that user expected behaviour on a website/internet platform hosted by company x is to being directed to the start page of company x when clicking the logo/icon. The differnece here: we are guests (company y to exemplify) and not the host of the website. I would therefore not expect to "land" on the hosts (company x) start page, if I click the guests icon/logo (company y). By clicking on the logo of company y, which presents itself via company X, I would expect to being linked to the start page of company y.

on the second topic: I would not expect, but rather hope that company y's website opens in a new window, just in case I would want to go back to the previous page.

Again, I am here to discuss these topics and, as stated in a earlier conversation, would be perfectly happy to put your input into actionable items, e.g. shorten the intro text on the main page.

My proposal: cut away one or two sentences of the general Zühlke info and shorten and specify the second part about our commitment to open source dev and github. Rolf, would you want to kick off that second part by putting together some bullet points on the what and why of our github presence?

Looking forward to your thoughts, comments and actions

best

Axel

@aXXL70

  1. if I understand your highly precise and very formal answer (have you studied mathematics or something similar? ), you agree with what I proposed, which means: clicking on Zühlke logo should open Zühlke webpage in a new tab. Right?
  2. the end of your answer is concerned with #5 again, and should therefore be discussed there (kind of offtopic here). I will put it there to contiunue the discussion there.

  1. Click on the zuehlke logo will now open the zuehlke website in a new tab
