Referred from: Dublin, Trinity College, MS 50. I am writing to report an issue with accessing the digital copy of the manuscript Dublin Trinity College MS 50 (A 4 20) https://www.vanhamel.nl/codecs/Dublin,_Trinity_College,_MS_50. I am currently unable to view the manuscript due to a "TypeError: Failed to fetch" error. The manuscript is crucial for my research, and resolving this issue would be immensely helpful. I greatly appreciate the excellent work done by your team in making these resources available.

Thanks for alerting me to this issue! I should stress that CODECS is not the source of these resources, but it brings them together using IIIF standards and technologies (https://iiif.io/).

In this case, it appears that Trinity College has recently restricted the use of their resources by third parties, which unfortunately means that TCD MS 50 is far from the only one from their digital collection to be affected by this change.

I don't know why the decision was made if it was a conscious decision, especially given that part of the point of IIIF is to share and disseminate. But I have a strong suspicion is that it is related to the captcha (e.g. 'identify all images with cars') that was recently introduced. The manifest for TCD MS 50 (https://digitalcollections.tcd.ie/concern/works/2801pk516/manifest) now requires captcha authentication, which is incompatible with the way IIIF works for third-party use. Hopefully, it is a temporary thing that happened by mistake and will be addressed soon.

In the meantime, you can go directly to the website: https://digitalcollections.tcd.ie/concern/works/2801pk516

Thank you for your quick and comprehensive response!

I appreciate the clarification regarding CODECS and the situation with Trinity College's resources. It's indeed unfortunate that TCD MS 50 and potentially other manuscripts are now restricted due to the recent changes. Thank you also for the direct link provided to access the manuscript!

Best regards,

Luca Avellis
