This is working well with only the events in my selected calendars triggering Do Not Disturb. Yesterday, I added a couple of new calendars to track things that aren't technically "events." I realized there was a problem when I saw that I was in Do Not Disturb in the middle of the afternoon today. I think it was triggered by an "event" in this new calendar.
I'd suggest that newly added calendars default to "off" in the Calendar Focus Sync Setting, or if not possible, put in the documentation that they will default to "on" so others aren't surprised.

Thanks for the great work!
