1. What is it?

They analyze two laws of semantic change:

2. What is amazing compared to previous works?

3. Where is the key to technologies and techniques?

They analyze these laws as follows:

  1. obtain pair of synonyms from Fernald (1896) or Allen (1920)
  2. chose synonym pairs where both words changed more than the population average over the eleven decades
  3. obtain control pairs as follows
    1. the JS divergence between the two control words in the 1890s must be smaller than the JS divergence between the synonyms for the same decade
    2. the total amount of semantic change over the eleven decades must be smaller for the control words than the synonyms
  4. compare JS divergence over time

4. How did evaluate it?

The JS divergence between pairs of synonym are lower than the JS divergence between control pairs. From this result, the law of parallel change is more common than the law of differentiation.
