First, I think this could be a good idea. The main issue for me would be that the graph won't be full-forward as some citations are posterior of the publicaion of the article, thus lowering the readability.
True for the 0 threshold display. However it may be interesting for a huge number of papers and a well set threshold so that you can easily trace back the origin of the work.
No matter the threshold. I have a paper A my database which cites a paper B. However A was published before B.
But I agree to a certain extent that it would be a nice feature. This can be resolved with colors and gradients or other modalities intead of the graph shape
Idea for a new display: have a chronological order of the papers' network. e.g. http://bl.ocks.org/robschmuecker/7880033 or https://bl.ocks.org/mbostock/4063570
