Many goons have made note of the excruciatingly lengthy swag lines, particularly during prime-time. Linecon is a thing, and it will never be altogether eliminated... but buying a t-shirt shouldn't be a harrowing 5-hour ordeal. During the DC28 DCIB debrief call, it was mentioned that the swag line is unnecessarily long, and we're hackers that have the tools at our disposal to at least propose a solution for improvement to the appropriate individuals. Potential ideas:
Put a board outside the swag area, and have swag staff update it whenever an item becomes endangered or is no longer available.
Create a super simple website (or integrate it into the conference app) that allows attendees to identify what merch is available, what its cost is, and where/when it can be obtained (but specifically not allowing for actual purchase).
Between those two ideas, if the second is chosen:
Could put a monitor outside the swag area, to indicate merch status in realtime.
Could build a selection form so that attendees can decide what merch they want ahead-of-time, including sizes and quanties, and calculating final cost.
Might be able to present that "cart" as a QR code, so that swag staff could just scan the code as the attendee gets near, and merch pickers could begin getting the merch ready ahead of time.
This could also speed up the time it takes attendees to have their cash ready-to-present, since they would have their exact total including tax before they got to the check-out stand.
If a web form would be too cumbersome for someone to use to keep the merch status up-to-date, we could even build a bot for it (i.e., discord). Then the appropriate goon roles could change it quickly. For example, "-swagitem dc28-m-2x n" might find the main DC28 shirt, male, size XXL, and mark it as no longer available. Potential-customers in line could then be notified of the change if they have an item in their "cart" that is in conflict.
These are suuuuuuuuuuper rough ideas and are not even a polished thought. I just don't want to forget about it.
