It only happens to me with versions 1.6.0 and higher of AA2 Unlimited

This is probably related to an update to DXVK or dgVoodoo that are included in AAUnlimited. You can download an older version of AAUnlimited and from the AAUnlimited\lib folder, copy the dxvk.dll and dgd3d9.dll files and paste them in the same folder of your game installation, replacing them.
