Which version of Google Desktop are you using? Can you click on the down-arrow
in on
top of the Google sidebar and then click About. This should open a page where
you can
see a line on the bottom saying something like "Google Desktop
5.8.0809.08522-de-pb".

Can you also try to install the gadget from www.desktop-gadgets.net/download/ ?
Maybe
the file was corrupted when Google Desktop downloaded it and then didn't
register as
a valid gadget file.

Ah, that is a common error in Google Desktop. To fix it you need to go to your
"My
Documents\My Google Gadgets" folder and there delete the Gmail Icon file. Then
you
can install it again.

I am having the same problem. I have uninstalled, reinstalled, deleted gadget
files,
deleted registry files, uninstalled and reinstalled again, and I STILL have the
problem. I'd be glad to check the manifest file if I even knew what the heck
it is.
Google has been no help. Can't someone figure this out?

In addition, when I click on the google desktop exe icon or a gadget in the my
documents file, it opens the desktop search box instead of the program or
gadget.

All this sounds very much like a bug in Google Desktop and not the gadget.
Maybe you
could report this in the official Google Desktop Help Group ?

I am having the same problem on my machine - however, the gadgets appear to be
working fine in other accounts (Administrator and Guest) - they just refuse to
work
in my own account. Has anyone discovered the reason or a fix?

I think I've cracked it! I uninstalled GoogleDesktop from my machine (but kept
the
Indexes - there's an option for this) and then downloaded and installed
GoogleDesktop
again. All appears to work now.

Deleting icons does not work!
Reinstall does not work!
Removing read-only attribute from My Google Gadgets folder does not work!
Changing ownership of folder to administrator does not work!
Changing ownership of folder to system does not work!
