Background task not working #122

Current behavior

the notifications page is not being updated in the background
toast notifications is not being updated in the background

Expected behavior

the notifications page should be updated in the background
toast notifications should be updated in the background

Steps to reproduce the behavior

open the app. go to notifications page and keep it running.
Login to github.com from a browser and go to notifications page.
mark a notification as read.
come back to app and see nothing has changed.
