radiation devices #8

First effort to define radiation devices:

"Radiation source": http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/NCIT_C138129 A device designed to emit radiation, either for external use or implantable. [def-source: NCI]

"Linear Accelerator": http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/NCIT_C28169 A type of particle accelerator that generates ionizing radiation by colliding subatomic particles traveling at high speeds along a straight chamber. This creates high-energy radiation that may be used to treat cancer. [def-source: NCI]

"Particle Accelerator": http://purl.obolibrary.org/obo/OMIT_0011310 This one troubles me a bit. It has two child classes: synchrotron and cyclotron. This all sounds well and good, but they have no notation and the ontology itself is about microRNA. How far afield do we go in adopting other ontology's terms?

Below is a (part of) simple taxonomy. My instinct is to define more basic aspects of a source than use axioms to build a more complex system. However, some of Jonathan's comments have given me the impression that a more direct approach is desired. So here is a simipleminded attempt at that.

BFO:object aggregate or object(?)

Radiation source

  • medical linear accelerator: def. accelerator that can produce x-ray and/or electron beams suitable for therapeutic medical treatments and that consists of systems for inputting delivery variables, monitoring the amount of radiation delivered, and producing beam shapes and angles necessary for the treatment.
  • medical particle accelerators: def. accelerator that can produce proton, neutron or heavier ion beams suitable for therapeutic medical treatments and that consists of systems for inputting delivery variables, monitoring the amount of radiation delivered, and producing beam shapes and angles necessary for the treatment.
  • brachytherapy afterloader: def. device that controls the position and time of treatment using a radioactive isotopic source of radiation.
  • seeds: def. an amount of radioactive isotope encapsulated in such as way as to be capable of being entered into the body and delivering a therapeutic dose of radiation.

Used ontofox to create taxonomy Radiation Devices.owl (see branch radiationDevices)

device (OBI)

radiation source (NCIT)

linear accelerator (NCIT) -> this has the right definition particle accelerator (NCIT) -> this has the right definition radioactive seed (NCIT)->is not perfect, is a subclass of unit in NCIT Concern is that I am not finding an afterloader.

Andre's definitions for radiation sources THen we start thinking of the parts. We can make this type of taxonomy as sub-classes of device (that is, sibling classes of radiation sources)

collimator

modulator

imaging devices

beam delivery syster
