add homebrew to docs, update instructions #120

See #88. Sadly CI is broken, so I've removed the binary instructions for now. I'd be happy to add them back or make any wanted changes.

Also, I added brew update. I assume we should remove this either before merging or whenever we think enough people have updated :-)
