Better filetype icons #146

Closed GoogleCodeExporter closed 9 years ago

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
I made some new filetype icons for MPX, as I found the current ones lack
differentiation between icons.

Here's a preview of what they look like now:
http://i28.tinypic.com/20a9fgo.jpg

I plan on differentiating audio and video further, and possibly, if I (or
someone else) have a brilliant idea about how to diff the subs icon, I will do
that too..

Let me know what you think!

They look really nice. As for audio - maybe something with music note could be
added that make this icon more "music-like". For subtitles I would merge it
with rtf icon to add some fake, blurred text.

Quite hard to express this ideas in text...

Thank you for the contribution.

To michalsznajder:
Thank you for the comment, that is just what I want to say.
If there are better ways to differentiate the A/V/S icons, I am really look
forward to it.

To lorenzo.fanchi:
If you have further ideas to improve them, please email to me,
zongyao.qu@gmail.com
I will send you the original icon files, which has higher resolution and layer
structure.

Well, I am not lazy on such kind of job, but I really don't have the sense of
art.

@zongyao.qu
I have my own template for a blank file icon, made in Illustrator (so as a
vector). I converted the MPX icon to PNG and added that to to vector
illustration, so I think the quality is already pretty high.

Will see what I can do about differentiation!

That does not matter lorenzo.fanchi.
You could upload any comment related any time. : )

As my personal comment,
I thought the video icon could be fixed,

and the audio icon, and sub icon, would you give it a try, from large scale to
small.
I am afraid, at the small size, the audio and sub will be too hard to recognize.

I thought, for the audio icon, ONE catching note might be enough. and for sub
icon, sorry, I don't have better idea.

How do you think about it? : )

And would you please leave a message to zongyao.qu@gmail.com? I could send you
the original file.

What don't you like about the video icon?

Readability is going to be an issue, I think. I will send you the .ICNS files,
so you can check for yourself. I do think they're a massive improvement over
the current ones.

One note will be hard to do, as it will break any kind of symmetry/balance in
the icon.

Any feedback from others is also very welcome!

Sorry for my lamed English,~~~~

My "fixed" means it could be considered as finalized, and doesn't need
modification any more. I like it as you like.

and the other icons, I will find some one for further help, don't worry. : )

For filetype icons, Rucksack does a good job.

Its icons are so fantastic, so can we do some references?

Original comment by Anakin...@gmail.com on 30 Jul 2010 at 3:35

GoogleCodeExporter commented 9 years ago
@AnakinMac

I think Rucksacks icons don't differentiate in a way that is applicable to a
media player. Rucksack can do anyway with changing only the color, because they
have so many file formats, it would be impossible to make a different style for
every archive type. In addition, archive filetypes can't really be
differentiated by associating different graphics to them. In contrast, the
three formats for a media player (i.e. video, audio & subs) can have distinctly
recognizable graphics applied to differentiate them. In this case: reel for
video, notes for audio and text for subs.

So, in short, I don't think looking at Rucksack will solve our problems. But
hey, that's just my opinion. Thanks for your input :)

@ lorenzo.fanchi

When people see Rucksack's icons for the first time, most of them will say they
are outstanding.
That's what we want too.
Rucksack designs the filetype icons in a colorful way, by that way they catch
users' attention.
Maybe we can learn from it.
Just design the icons in a new idea, make it more simple (maybe we can throw
the 'Video' labels etc. away) & vivid (colorful maybe).
That's my opinion.
Thanks for your attention~

@ Rucksack

I agree with Lorenzo. We just have 3 types of files that are are really
different. So we need more difference than only colors. Reels/notes/text seems
to be a great idea.

@ lorenzo.fanchi

I share doubts with zongyao.qu about size. I have to check out icons at smaller
size to judge. Please post somewhere .ICNS for comparison.

@ Lorenzo, oickill

Do you mind if I ask for the original files of these icons?

png, icns are all publish formats, they are not fit for the editing.
So for future improvements, I may ask for the original versions which may be
psd, ai ... So that, some one could improve these arts further based on your
work.

And also, I recommend you use the original version of them, which are psd files.

If you think it is a better idea, I will send these files to you by email.

I invested a lot of time to re-create the blank file icon in Illustrator, as a
base for icon design. I wouldn't mind sending my original AI file to you, but
I'd like for you to keep it only for yourself and not distribute it among
friends etc.

If you agree, I'd be happy to send it to you..

P.S. If you could make the "Thank You" go out to "Lorenzo Fanchi", I'd be very
honored :)

Oh, But there is one thing I have to get your permissions.

If in the future development, I may send the original files to the developers
who will make the further improvement.
I will ask them not to distribute them, of course.
