would I have to add support for .srt or .vtt subtitles?

Yes you would for now I'm afraid. It's a good idea and i'll consider trying it myself and see if this is possible.

Not at the moment sorry. Got a few things going on. Once i get time I'll attempt it. In theory this should work.
