Description

SimPEG (http://simpeg.xyz) is a package for geophysical forward modelling and inversion routines. The package includes electromagnetics (time and frequency domain, 1D, 2D, 3D), magnetotellurics, direct current resistivity, Richards equation (vadose zone fluid flow), gravity, and magnetics. All forward modelling routines also come with inverse optimization routines to estimate a model given a geophysical data set. The package has built in support for finite volume (weak formulation) in 1D, 2D and 3D (cylindrical, tensor, curvilinear and octree meshes) as well as a number of visualization routines.

The project is a multi-university effort to put out an open standard for computational geophysics that is accessible to people who do not focus on the numerical implementations. Education is a huge part of this project, and we have created/modified labs and assignments that are starting to cross cut a few university courses (http://em.geosci.xyz, http://gpg.geosci.xyz). Students should have access to the same numerical tools that scientists use everyday.

Note to the Project Lead

Congrats, @rowanc1! This is your official project listing for the Mozilla Science Global Sprint 2016. To confirm your submission, please complete the following:

Do you want to become a featured project?

Here are some exercises that will help your project be more inviting to new contributors. We hope you'll try to complete some of these as you prepare for #mozsprint.

If you complete all the exercises, your project will be eligible to be featured in our collection of open source science projects! Once you've finished this list, contact @acabunoc to submit your project for review.
