definition and/or example of dc:extent #34

The spec says that "Partial Catalog Entries SHOULD include the following
metadata elements, if available: [...] dc:extent". But the dc:extent
element is not mentioned at any other place in the spec. You should not
just rely on the people's different interpretation of this DCMI Metadata
Term but at least provide an example or better a short definition what is
expected to be in this metadata element.

I recommend to explicitely state that the extend should contain the "The
size or duration of the resource" independent of its particular
representation format (sic!). Otherwise you will find the size of each
different format in this metadata element.

I've started using dc:extent in our OPDS feed and I agree that it should be
strictly used independently from any representation format.

The lack of a standardized way to express such things as page count or word
count is also very problematic for clients such as QuickReader that process
this kind of metadata.
