Even though google has recently integrated the south korean maps onto the
.com website, they are not accessible with version 0.90.

Sorry but No, that feature is not available in version 0.09
The South Korea maps update is not in the same server that we download the
images.

I see. It would be great if the server that supports korean maps could be used
in a
future version.

I am currectly living in south korea and I plan to use a netbook with a
bluetooth GPS
receiver to find my way around seoul.

Is there any way I could help?

Of course you can help! that is the beauty of Open Source, we all can help!
you can start here:
def layer_url_template(self, layer, online):

what about the maps here: http://www.openstreetmap.org/
Do you think is a good idea spending time in that?

I guess that the we are using the same maps as the URL below
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&output=html&q=seoul+korea&zoom=7

The OpenStreetMap.org might be a good alternative and is really easy to
integrate,
see Issue 63

I honestly do not want to change the way we get maps from Google, and at some
point
they will update all their server.

For now you can change change the map service to OpenStreetMap:
