Can we think of a better alternative to the 3D-printed stand? Is it needed?

Fabio Seiji experimented with aluminium extrusions (see below). Alex Maass also suggested using them.

This contraption would attach vertically to a table. The yellow parts were supposed to act as clamps to hold the stand up. In practice, it didn't work very well.
