The author of PR #298 is no longer active and another PR was merged while the former was WIP, introducing conflicting changes.

This PR takes over #298

Could you please add the patches from PR#298 to this PR and close the 298?

@mzidek-gh, silly me, yeah, that makes more sense.

I had to redo some of the GLibification changes in the new .c-based tests. Should be ok now.
