TST: update unit test style #58

Describe the feature Reduce duplication and improve unit test output by:

[x] Adapting class structures
[x] Using parametrize
[x] Adding docstrings to tests
[x] Extending coverage to uncovered lines
[x] Add tests for array inputs of various shapes

This should be done after dropping support for Python 2.7 (#38)
