TST: improved array testing #77

Description

Added arrays of different shapes to the unit tests. Fixes #58. Info learned when developing this added to Issue #62.

Running the improved unit tests

Test Configuration:

Operating system: OS X Mojave
Python version number: 3.7
Compiler with version number: gcc version 9.3.0 (MacPorts gcc9 9.3.0_5)
Any details about your local setup that are relevant: need to update test_helpers before converting from draft.
