New URL for the report that can be included in the brochure

We want a short, memorable URL that can accompany a QR code in the brochure at ASEC.

I discussed this with Will and John in our Lead's meeting today. They have a plan for DNS involving a reverse proxy server. I'm going to add an issue to the Data Ducts board or connect with one already there.

Dayne has lots of contributions to this idea:

I would steer us away from [a permanent URL that nestles this book under ACEP instead of GitHub].

paraphrasing:

• We should have an ACEP website page for this book that talks about it, but it should not be the book itself because the ACEP website does not offer stable long-term URL endpoints. It changes too often.
• The current [GitHub] URL is a good long-term stable URL to keep and have people use.
• If we want a URL that has acep.uaf.edu on it, then we should consider having a CNAME for this website setup that is something like. This would be simple to do: (reponame).[data.acep.uaf.edu](http://data.acep.uaf.edu/) That would make this repo name be: aetr-web-book-2024.data.acep.uaf.edu

Then later:

• We might want to avoid the aetr-web-book-2024.data.acep.uaf.edu because it changes the relative URLs between GitHub and the CNAME's URL.
• If we wanted to avoid having relative URLs flip-flap around, we could setup something like books.acep.uaf.edu that acts as a home for static website "books" so the URL would be books.acep.uaf.edu/aetr-web-book-2024/
• However, [that] would require us to run and manage a proxy server to accomplish that effect. This is something to consider, though, if we want to own more of our static website infrastructure hosting.

Yuri had me talk to Sherrie (Roberts) who is a web developer at the university about this. There are 2 services that might help

subdomains of uaf.edu

• Administered by Nook Technologies. They maintain a list of domains they have already created so there are no dups
• will look like xxx.uaf.edu
• keep it clean with few dots and no dashes. as clean as possible
• I'm going to email them to see if some of these are already created

Vanity URLS

• for cases where URL is too long for something like a publication. URL shortener
• works for X.uaf.edu domains but not 3rd party domains
• talk to Sherrie about those slroberts@alaska.edu

And I'm not sure if Sherrie is right POC. When I want to do alaska.edu or uaf.edu I'd just talk to Ken to have the subdomain DNS delegated to a DNS server we control.

we have data.acep.uaf.edu ... we also have anything.lab.acep.uaf.edu already available to play with... so CAMIO facing things can use that ... yeah, there is no need to worry about the legacy data.acep.uaf.edu website service .. we will not be restoring that

they (Will and Dhaha) just need to change how it is managed.
