No buttons in sidebar (gtk's issue?)

What steps will reproduce the problem?
1. launching ardesia on (at least) xubuntu 13.10

What is the expected output? What do you see instead?

expected buttons in sidebar...
i see a grey buttonless bar, but hovering on an area where a button should be 
does pop-up context help with the button title

What version of the product are you using? On what operating system?

ardesia 1.1
xubuntu 13.10 x64
gtk 2.24.20

Please provide any additional information below.

gtk seems to be suffering from some regressions this go around, could be the 
cause
no useful info dumped in the console
the program works fine, except the sidebar
strace produces huge amounts of mouse monitoring info, but i didn't notice 
anything useful

thanks, it's fun using ardesia with python-whiteboard

keyboard (or wii-mote) hotkeys would be incredibly useful
