Consider the interplay between note buttons, pitch, and background color

My initial thought:

Pastel red, green, and blue note buttons
A very dark background that matches the current note buttons, e.g. red + green = yellow
Slightly increase the brightness of the background as pitch increases
Quickly fade the color from one to the next when it changes
