The Olympic Games Milano Cortina 2026 are fast approaching, but a speedy countdown clock is of little concern to the world’s fastest short track speed skaters. These athletes live for the pressure-filled race weekends full of drama, speed and razor-thin margins of victory – a tantalising trio they’ll find at the ISU Short Track World Tour 2024-2025.

Launching with the first stop in Montreal, Canada from 25-27 October, the ISU Short Track World Tour promises a thrilling display of skating, veteran and new talent, as well as innovative broadcasts.

The series will visit three continents, beginning with two stops in North America. A two-stop stay in East Asia awaits the world’s best short track speed skaters in December, before a brief hiatus in January. The International Skating Union (ISU) released a statement last week that the ISU Short Track World Tour #2 event will be relocated to Montreal due to safety concerns.

The decision by the world governing body was made after being informed by US Speedskating and the Utah Olympic Oval that the new padding system compliant with ISU Communication 2626 will not arrive in time for the start of the event, nor the ISU Four Continents Short Track Championships which were both slated for November in Salt Lake City, Utah.

The ISU is still exploring options for the Four Continents at a later date this season.

The ISU extended its gratitude to Speed Skating Canada, Patinage de Vitesse Québec and the City of Montreal for their immediate support and swift action in facilitating this transition. The ISU Short Track World Tour #2 event will be held on the same dates as initially scheduled: 1- 3 November 2024.

Joe Morissette, chief executive officer of Speed Skating Canada, says while there will be challenges hosting a second event on short notice, he is confident the organising committee and volunteers will succeed.

The first stop in the tour started last week in Montreal, where local skating star William Dandjinou captured two golds on home ice. Compatriot Steven Dubois also enjoyed two home podium finishes with double silvers.

Dandjinou's breakout season saw him win six individual World Cup medals, including three victories in the 1,500m. He capped off the year by winning the world title in the 1000m.

The first leg of the ISU Short Track World Tour ends Sunday, with the final competition day featuring finals for the men's 1000m, women's 1500m, women's 500m, men's 5,000m relay and mixed relay.
