Swappable non-rechargeable batteries work better for something used occasionally. That way if you forget to charge one or more devices(or worse, all of them), it's just a quick trip to to the store instead of a frantic search to find enough chargers and then telling everyone they'll be able to play in two hours. On a related note, non-rechargeable lithium batteries suffer less loss over time and when they do die they do not normally leak. This makes them ideal for this purpose.
This was the first thing I thought about, but I doubt it's required, because the devices are not to be used regularly, so using AAA batteries are more practical. Such events are held several times a year, I guess, so it's better to use common batteries. Maybe change it to "Design a 3d-printed housing with integrated battery slots" ?
