finish thumbs up #19

I messed up and put some of the thumbs up stuff into master already, but here's the rest of it, working. This also includes a fix for some of the spec-related issues we were seeing, by using database cleaner instead of transactional fixtures which don't work in phantomjs.

I'm going to self-merge this because it contains spec fixes that I need to work on other stuff.
